what is bad art?
such a great question. there are thousands of people who have spent entire careers attempting to answer the question "what is art?" and we are not going to
answer that question here. but we can at least attempt to define "bad art", at least as far as that term is useful.
here's what "bad art" can mean, depending entirely on who you ask:
- any kind of art you don't like
- art that tried to render a certain subject realistically and failed
- art that depicts controversial or uncomfortable subject matters
- art by certain groups of people
- art by untrained artists
- art by a specific person who is an asshole
- mass-produced art sold at retail outlets
- outdoor, public art
- abstract art
- representational art
- art found in non-art-oriented spaces (e.g., the dentist's office)
- beginners' art
- kids' art
- art you don't immediately understand
- art made from readymade or found objects
- art made of gross or disgusting materials
- digital art
- art made by computers without direct human intervention (e.g., AI-generated art)
- art depicting things against the dominant religion
- art depicting things against your personal religion
- art depicting illegal activities
- art that isn't legible without outside context (e.g., an artist's statement; the title of the piece)
so many definitions of bad art are available to us! isn't it glorious? this means there is a whole world of bad art you can make!
