but how do I make bad art?
how to make bad art in ~~three~~ several E-Z steps:
- say to yourself, "today I am going to make some really shitty, terrible, bad art." make this a mantra for yourself. your art is supposed to be bad today.
it can be good later, but right now we're specifically aiming to make bad art.
- get something to make marks on: piece of printer paper, notepad, grocery receipt, brown paper bag, whiteboard, the back of your hand, the sidewalk, the ground, etc.
- get something to make marks with, several somethings if you have them available: pen(s), pencil(s), crayons, whiteboard marker(s), eyeliner, a particularly cool rock, chalk, lipstick, etc.
- make some marks on the surface.
- make some more marks. don't think too much about it, just let your arm and hand do what they want.
- look at the marks. what do you think of them? do they remind you of anything?
- think about this for a minute, or not.
- make more marks. they don't have to relate to the first ones, or they can if you want
- make more marks in any way that occurs to you: scribble all over the page, do little dots one after the other, play 47 games of tic-tac-toe
with yourself all on top of each other, play drums on the page with two crayons, write a big heart with " + art" in it -- there are no rules
- periodically stop and look at how things are appearing on the page. if your inner critic starts saying things like "wow this is really bad",
tell it proudly "yes it is! I'm winning at making bad art!"
- continue making marks.
- stop when you feel like it.
- do it again.
